THATHN Cast - Angela Robinson, Renee Lawless, John Schneider, Jaclyn Betham, Crystal Fox and Tika Sumpter

This past Wednesday IGN magazine got an opportunity to get a sneak peek of Tyler Perry’s two new scripted series THE HAVES AND THE HAVE NOTS and LOVE THY NEIGHBOR.

THE HAVES AND HAVE NOTS is a provocative series that follows the complicated dynamic between the rich and powerful Cryer family and the hired help who work in their luxurious Savannah, Georgia, mansion. Reminiscent of the “Dallas” and “Dynasty” days of the 70’s and 80’s, cast member Renée Lawless states clearly that “WE ARE NOT A SOAP OPERA.” Renee Lawless, who plays Katheryn Cryer, and the rest of her Cryer Family sit down with us to discuss soap opera comparisons and character inspiration.

When asked about the difference between THAHN and other shows Jaclyn Betham, who plays Amanda Cryer, says “on a soap opera nothing really happens the same story line dragged on for years. 5 years later and you still don’t know who the daddy is. But with our show, every episode is filled with something dramatic.

“So if you miss episode 3 and your now watching episode 4 you may want to TIVO episode 3 so you can understand, because honey it’s a lot…” says Angela Robinson who plays Veronica Harrington.

Known for his array of dynamic characters Tyler Perry has an eye for detail when it comes to the personalities of his characters. “My character is a mix between Phylicia Rashad and Diane Carroll” says Angela Robinson about her character Veronica Harrington. “I studied a lot of the works of Diane, especially Dynasty… and Phylicia is actually a friend so I drew a lot of inspiration from those two.

“When it came to inspiration I went straight to the source, Mr. Perry” says John Schneider who plays Jim Cryer. “He’s very good at telling you what he wants and it worked.”

THE HAVES AND THE HAVE NOTS premieres May 28th at 9/8c on the OWN Network.

Described as “TYLER PERRY” funny, Love Thy Neighbor is the newest comedy presented to us from the Perry Franchise. This new situation comedy follows Hattie Mae Love and her middle class family as they go through their daily joys, struggles, triumphs and fumbles. IGN got a chance to sit with the cast to talk about this new and exciting show.

For all of the real Tyler Perry fans, we have been introduced to Hattie Mae a few times; so one must wonder where the inspiration for such a comical character comes from.
“Hattie is my mother, my grandmother, my aunt, and my good friend Melvina. Melvina was one of my girlfriends from Ohio and she would cut up all the time. But I understood her. I took bits and pieces from everyone and that’s where Hattie came from.” says Patrice Lovely about her incomparable character.

We also sat down with the very funny Palmer Williams (who plays Floyd) and Zulay Henao (who plays Marianna) and asked them how they felt about their roles and their onset chemistry with the rest of the cast. “I never knew I was funny”, says Williams, “someone had to point it out to me. So when I’m on set just being myself I make people laugh which can be hard when we are trying to get through a scene.” Zulay replies by saying “we are a big family, so the set is always filled with love.”

Tyler Perry’s Love Thy Neighbor is a unique collection of stories that warm the heart, provoke thought, and always serves up a heap of laughs. Through all the changes, there is one constant, and that is the universal language called Love. It’s all about love. LOVE THY NEIGHBOR premieres May 29th at 9/8c on the OWN Network
